Nicole Ari Parker, an American actor, who has been featured in films and television in addition to on stage, is most well-known for playing Teri Joseph, a fiery lawyer in the show the show on Showtime called Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe became her stage name after her wedding. While growing up within Baltimore, Maryland, she was always intrigued by acting. The family was born in Mumbai, India and raised in Nigeria until the age of seven. Contractor was a seasoned traveler who enjoyed world travels and a variety of different cultures from a young age. The boarding school she attended was in London between seven and nine, after which her family relocated into Toronto, Canada, where she lived the bulk of her early childhood and adulthood. Contractor was a successful academic at the University of Toronto Toronto while also training as the ballerina. She studied at the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto, an arts school which focuses on dance and theater. Contractor was 16 when she realized that performing would become her profession. She danced for over a decade. When she completed high school, she won an entire scholarship to University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed an MA in Theatre, and was also a double major in sociology and psychology. Contractor auditioned at the prestigious Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, for Pericles. After a full year, she was awarded the role of lead. In 2002, Canadian theater critics were awed by her performance in 92 productions of Pericles. Contractor accepted the offer to take part in Stratford's Conservatory course. Only eight men selected as well as four females get accepted for a 20-week intensive course in the classical theatre. Contractor's participation in the next play-season was confirmed and she was cast in the role of Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
