As a result of graduating from an Bachelor of Music program (Boston University in 1963) However, following that I was experiencing the liberal arts in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75) I'm convinced that education should be one that integrates study of the arts alongside study of other subjects. Not surprising for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967 and PhD from UCLA)! My ethnomusicology degree, which I began from UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is conveniently located in a music department in the College of Letters and Science. Being able to explore multiple interests is something I really like. It's great teaching graduate as well as undergraduate students. I'm a published author of three books: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing the Music of Expressing Culture. Also, I rotate periods during which I engage in mainly academic pursuits with periods when I add administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98; Chair of all the Deans at the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chairperson of the Group of Asian Studies, since 1999, and as Chair of the Department of Music again).
